In the middle of a global city, space is always at a premium—so the more you can maximize the square footage of a building’s internal area, the better. For this landmark 55-storEy tower in London’s Docklands, designed by Herzog & de Meuron, that is exactly the role of Tara Bernerd & Partners’ as the designated interior architect.

Bernerd was appointed by Sir George Iacobescu of Canary Wharf Group and began work on the project by studying the floor plans with her team in minute detail so that they could best orient the tower’s 452 apartments. The building has been divided into three zones, known as loft (base), cluster (middle), and bay (top), each with its own highly complex floor plate.

The first thing that the team did was to work off a complex floor-layout grid for each zone, which included a mix of studio, one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom apartments on each floor. The next step was to focus on the layout of these variously sized apartments. As Bernerd recalls, “We spent nearly a year just working out the layouts.”

Following on from this stage was the creation of three levels of spec for the apartments, evoking a strong sense of place within one of the world’s most iconic cities.
